The Final Fantasy franchise features some of the most iconic video game characters to ever exist. No matter the entry, these characters will often be forced to go on long, perilous journeys to uncover who they really are. Most of the series will focus on characters with complex backstories and document how they change in response to the world around them.
Most characters in Final Fantasywill remain the same from the start of a game’s story to the very end, but some undergo severe changes. The character a player fell in love with at the beginning of a narrative can often be transformed into an entirely new person by the end, but some are far more memorable than others.
7/7 Cloud – Final Fantasy 7

Cloud’s introduction in Final Fantasy 7 sets to portray him as a reclusive mercenary who only helps others in the hope of profiting. As the story progresses, he is revealed to have a much more sensitive side than what he lets on, but it is only upon regaining his memories that his true personality is finally revealed.
Cloud was captured by Hojo after Sephiroth’s attack on Nibelheim and was forced to undergo some truly sinister experiments. As a result of this, he lost his memory but somehow managed to cling onto Zack’s, a SOLDIER he worked alongside while employed in Shinra’s military. He eventually regains his memories and becomes his true, somewhat more expressive self again.
6/7 Gilgamesh – Final Fantasy 5
As the first recurring character in the Final Fantasy series, it is understandable why his character has been altered so regularly. Most of his appearances see him donning a new design and personality, but his story arc in Final Fantasy 5 allowed him to evolve into the most charming version of himself he has ever been.
Gilgamesh is Exdeath’s most trusted servant and will pose multiple problems for Bartz and his companions throughout the story. Upon being banished from the world, however, his desire to pursue evil becomes somewhat diminished. He joins the party in the Interdimensional Rift during the battle against Necrophobe and informs the characters individually of why he respects them before once again fading away.
5/7 Garnet – Final Fantasy 9
Garnet’s introduction in Final Fantasy 9 depicts her as an honorable princess with little knowledge of the world outside her kingdom. She spent most of her youth abiding by her mother’s commands, but one day chose to flee in the hope of uncovering the secrets of her past.
She takes the opportunity to leave during her sixteenth birthday when the Tantalus Theater Troupe arrives in Alexandria to kidnap her. The time she spends in Zidane’s company allows her to reflect on her life while also uncovering who she truly is. The end of Garnet’s story sees her become confident in her abilities as both a ruler and a summoner. Though she longs to have Zidane by her side, it is made abundantly clear that she doesn’t need anyone to hold her hand.
4/7 Tidus – Final Fantasy 10
Tidus begins his story as a world-renowned Blitzball star who has led a mostly easy life. One day, a giant monster known as Sin comes to wreak havoc on his home, but Tidus refuses to stand by and watch it happen. He tries to fight the beast but is absorbed and wakes up in an unfamiliar land.
Tidus joins Yuna on her pilgrimage with the sole intention of finding a way to get back to Zanarkand. He is confident that he will one day make it home but slowly comes to realize that doing so would be impossible. In the end, he decides to sacrifice himself to save a world he owes nothing to.
3/7 Shadow – Final Fantasy 6
Before becoming a sword-for-hire, Shadow went by the name of Clyde and spent most of his days robbing trains with his friend, Baram. The two were inseparable and held great respect for one another until, one day, Clyde was forced to abandon his friend to escape the law.
Clyde went on to start a family, but he was never truly able to escape his past. He abandoned his life as Clyde and began working as a mercenary under a new name. He grows a great deal during his journey and eventually decides to stop running from his fate. He refuses to flee after defeating Kefka and instead decides to return to Baram’s side in the afterlife.
2/7 Yuna – Final Fantasy 10
Yuna has always had some pretty big shoes to fill as the daughter of High Summoner Braska. It is because of her father’s choice to become a summoner that she also took the same path, but the further she delves into Spira, the more she begins to reevaluate her destiny.
Yuna spends the vast majority of Final Fantasy 10being guided by the world around her. Upon reaching Zanarkand, however, she decides that enough is enough and vows to live her life on her own terms. Yuna’s story sees her transform from a pawn of Yevon into a freethinking hero who bows to no one.
1/7 Noctis – Final Fantasy 15
The opening of Final Fantasy 15 sees Noctis and his friends setting off on a journey to Altissia to meet Lunafreya, Noctis’s soon-to-be wife. Their ventures together allow them to all evolve as characters, but Noctis changes much more than any of his peers.
He begins his journey as a spoilt brat who cares little for anything other than himself. It is only upon losing his father and kingdom that he begins to realize his true purpose: to prevent the world from falling into darkness. Noctis eventually sacrifices himself to restore peace to the world, an action the Noctis at the beginning of the game would likely never have performed.
